Benny PopePLAYWRIGHT • COMEDIAN • ACTORBorn in rural Aiken, South Carolina, Benny Pope began writing at an early age. He is the 7th of 8 sons to his parents. Growing up in the country provided a plethora of subjects for him to write about and some of the memories even fuel much of his comedy. His interest in science led him to pursue a degree in Microbiology from Clemson University. After graduating from college in 1994, he moved back to Aiken, SC. and led the Drama Ministry of the Mount Anna Missionary Baptist Church. During this time he was privileged to write and direct many plays and skits. His most challenging task was directing and humbly playing the role of Jesus in an Easter musical entitled The Resurrection Story, produced by his Pastor and mentor, the late Rev. Alfred Holmes. This production consisted of a cast of over 70 cast members and singers, a live band, and a technical support team.In 2002 Benny's path led him to Maryland where both his career and writing was catapulted to the next level. Upon his relocation to Maryland, Benny joined The First Baptist Church of Glenarden (FBCG) where he served as a writer for Vision, the official news magazine for FBCG. He also served on the FBCG Drama Ministry under the direction of the talented and gifted Stephen Byrd. Benny appeared in the stage plays Yet Will I Praise Him and The Prodigal Son both written and directed by Byrd. Benny also wrote a skit entitled Starving for Service which was performed by the FBCG Singles Ministry. Benny had the privilege of crossing paths with Comedian Marilyn Franklin, aka, Platinum(www.platinumthechristiancomedian.com). In 2003 he penned a play entitled Naomi's Story, which chronicles the book of Ruth. As only she can, Platinum added her comedic twist and brought to life this one-woman comedy-drama at the University of Maryland. This play was later featured on Franklin's debut DVD entitled Triple Platinum Live.A One Woman Stand Up Comedy Show. She continues to delight audiences with this uplifting performance.In 2005 by request of the Seniors Ministry of the Mount Anna Missionary Baptist Church of Aiken SC Benny wrote a stage play entitled The Storm is Almost Gone. This play was performed before a sold-out crowd on May 20, 2006. It was directed by Dorothy Lloyd of Aiken, SC and featured recording artist Thelma J. Robinson. On March 17 and 18th of 2007, The Storm is Almost Gone was performed again and a live video recording was produced. In addition, the soundtrack for the play was released. Benny wrote several songs for the project; Grateful, Change, and Storms of Life. Other artists who contributed songs to the project were, Noldon Pope, Thelma J. Robinson, and Pricilla Warren. The Storm is Almost Gone was performed in Severn, Md on June 23, 2007. Benny continues to make his home in Maryland and is still writing and acting. His stage play, The Time is Now, will hit the stage in 2012. In 2010, Benny appeared in the stage play Why Me, written by Jeremy Allen(www.jmichaelproductions.com), and his most recent appearance was as "Marvin Straight" in the comedy, Mystery at Motown. Benny also continues to perform standup comedy. He is best known for his character portrayal of his 74 year old alter ego known as Sal.

Naomi’s Story, a one-woman, co-authored work was performed at the University of Maryland by Christian comedian, Marilyn Franklin, aka “Platinum”. This play was later featured on Franklin’s debut DVD entitled “Triple Platinum Live…A One Woman Stand-Up Comedy Show” and continues to delight audiences everywhere.

Benny’'s one act plays, MIRACLE AT THE MALL was performed at the Mount Anna Missionary Baptist Church in 2004 and STARVING FOR SERVICE was performed by First Baptist Church of Glenarden’s Singles Ministry in 2005.

The Comedy of Benny PopeThe comedy of Benny Pope all started with a dream, a plan, and...NOT!!! Benny's comedy actually started when his brother Noldon needed to fill an entertainment spot on a New Year's Eve event. Not one to turn down a safe, sane(relatively speaking) challenge, Benny created a comedic, 70-something year old character by the name of “Sal”. Sal is the embodiment of the patriarchs who has shaped Benny with wisdom throughout the years. With this, Sal made his debut on December 31, 2007 at Calvary International Worship Center in Severn, Maryland. As destiny would have it, there were requests after his premiere appearance for Sal to entertain other audiences. Sal plans to be around for a long time imparting hope, wisdom, and laughter to the masses. Benny also enjoys appearing on stage as himself. He has much to laugh about with his audiences, particularly on growing up in rural south carolina, as the 7th of 8 sons to his parents.
